Insight #1 – The power of community and giving back
It’s great to be a part of such a vibrant and diverse community that is WordPress. WordCamp Seville 2015 provided a good opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones. We had lots of great conversations, sharing experiences and ideas with colleagues and learning from each other.
There’s a real ethos of ‘giving back’ in the WordPress community which we embrace at Moove Agency and prompted our MD Ilona to share our experiences of working with our clients in her talk ‘Our winning formula for working with and retaining large clients‘.
Ilona said “from a speaker’s perspective, WordCamp events are always brilliantly organised and things work perfectly. I really enjoyed the experience, it sparked lots of great conversations and I made new connections in the community”.

Insight #2 – ‘Skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been
Great wisdom and insights were shared by the WordPress Founder, Matt Mullenweg . Matt’s hour-long Q&A was the much-anticipated highlight of the WordCamp Seville 2015 conference and Matt did not disappoint! He was grilled by some challenging questions on topics that ranged from WordPress security to the latest developments in the field of WordPress multi-lingual support.
Matt explained the reasoning behind the decision not to use the latest PHP frameworks as well as dispelled fears that Automattic could become the next Acquia.
Matt shared some wisdom around planning for the future: lift your head, scan the horizon and, to paraphrase a quote from Gretzky, ‘Skate to where the puck is going… not where it is right now’. Wise words from a truly visionary leader.
Insight #3 – Acquisitions and partnership: The WooCommerce story
WooCommerce co-founder Mark Forrester gave an entertaining and interesting talk, sharing the WooCommerce journey so far and lessons learnt along the way. Mark explained that WooCommerce were seeking a solid hosting partner to scale the platform and democratise eCommerce business with open source software.
It was interesting to hear their story and encounters with venture capital firms before they eventually decided to work with Automattic based on their mutual love for the community and shared vision. Mark shared that WooCommerce will soon be used as a hosted platform and a product similar to WordPress.com, so watch this space!
Insight #4 – Location, location, location!
Conferences provide a good opportunity to learn, reflect and network and the venue plays an important part in facilitating this process. The venue chosen by the WordCamp Europe organisers was simply perfect for the conference.
We stayed at a beautiful conference venue that enabled a very professionally run event. The venue had an outdoor pool and it was fantastic to dive in and cool off after a full day of conferencing! It was also a great location to reach the stunning city of Seville, soak up the Spanish atmosphere, enjoy some tapas and reflect on the learning and conversations of the day.
A big thank you to all of the volunteers and the fantastic organisers of WordCamp Seville for such a meticulously run event – everything stayed on schedule and the communication was spot on throughout.
We are already looking forward to the next year’s WordCamp!
