Our Account Managers are the first point of contact with our Clients and they play a critical role in the successful delivery of our projects. So what does it take to be a great Account Manager? Two of our Superstar Account Managers Hannah and Russell tell us more about the role.
What skills do you need to be an Account Manager?
Hannah: Our website projects are quite technical so you need a good understanding of how websites work. As well as a good technical understanding, you need to be a people person with good organisational skills. We’re very focussed on delivering exceptional customer service so it’s important to be a great communicator and to be willing to go the extra mile.
What kind of training do you need?
Hannah: You don’t necessarily need formal training to be an Account Manager but I think you need to be curious as, in our sector, there are always new advances and something new to learn which is part of what I really enjoy about the role. Knowledge can become dated quickly so I read articles and forums to keep my knowledge up to date as well as learning from our Developers. We also have formal training in our roles such as the Agile course that we did during our team retreat earlier this year.
What do you think is important about the Account Manager role?
Russell: I see myself as the bridge between our Production Team and our Clients. I communicate with our Clients from a business perspective – I talk with them to understand the issues they want to solve and then I discuss solutions with our Developers. That way, even the smallest details will be there when the team executes the work.
What’s a typical day for you?
Russell: there’s no typical day, but there is a typical pattern. I speak with our Developers daily to go through projects that we’re working on to get the latest updates so that I can keep our Clients fully updated with progress that we’re making. Part of my role is to facilitate smooth and clear communication throughout the project cycle so I’m regularly in touch with both our Clients and our Production team, keeping the project moving.
What interesting projects are you working on right now?
Hannah: We’re building a large new website for one of our global clients. It’s a big project and we’re currently in the design phase – it’s great to see the Designer bringing the Client brief to life and seeing the website take shape.
Russell: I’m working on a really interesting project where we’re re-building the entire booking engine for a large travel site. We’re working in an agile way and building out the different features at a fast pace – it’s going to make a huge difference to the client and their customers once the new site goes live.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Russell: the variety of businesses and the Clients that we work with. I’m passionate about digital and it’s great to work in an industry that continues to evolve and solve business challenges. There are always new and interesting developments around the corner and that’s pretty exciting.
Hannah: I enjoy the process of seeing a website take shape. Our clients understand and appreciate our processes and the hard work involved in building a great website – we receive fantastic feedback from our clients about our work and to see that they’re so pleased with the work that we do makes the job very rewarding.
